ANTONY - If it be Your Will (2006)

I loved the film Bonnie and Clyde starring Warren Beattie and Faye Dunaway from 1969 and when I heard there was a new TV version over two episodes I was quite looking forward to it.

I am sad to say it was rather disappointing. I could not understand a word they were saying. The Texas drawl was over done and there was no subtitles.

I don't know why I persevered and watched the second episode. I am glad I did as the song over the credits was superb. I new the song but was not sure of the singer. I thought it may be Ray Lamontagne.

After a little internet browse I found it was by Antony from Antony and the Johnsons. It was from a tribute album of Leonard Cohen songs called I'm Your Man (2006). I remember the album but never got round to getting it.

It was most enjoyable especially the Antony cover. I have also added Beth Orton's magnificient live cover of the Sisters Of Mercy, which incidentally was the first LC song I heard and was on the fabulous CBS compilation album 'The Rock Machine Turns you On'

What is Michele Friendly?

Well it started quite a long time a go, probably in the eighties. You see I had a big problem with Old Ma.  If we were having a drink at home, she just did not like my choices of music. If  Dylan, Van or Joy Division came on, the evening would go flat or we would end up having an argument about how lousy Dylan's voice is etc etc.

What was the solution? well I came up with the Michele Friendly cassette. I would hand pick songs I thought she would like, she did lean towards disco and dance. The song would only get on the tape if I liked it as well. Essential.

I even made picture covers and took a lot of care to make them look appealing and attractive. I convinced OM that they were her tapes and that she had actually really good taste. I made one up every few months and made it out to be a great event.

Of course I would convince her that she had great taste and I was only putting on tape what she liked. 

A typical tape may have Santana, always a few Reggae, as luckily she likes that, maybe some REM or U2. New Order was acceptable so there certainly was room to manoeuvre. I would also have some of the latest dance music which I would of course have to like. 

The big thing for me was to slip on something really daring and get off with it. I did manage to slip on a Joy Division track The Eternal. She even ask who that was as she liked it. I even managed to get off with a Dylan track Belle Isle. Oh how I loved that.  If only you could have seen how I glowed.

It's all a case of doing what you have to do, but at the same time making the best of what is available.

I progressed from cassettes to Cd's, always with carefully prepared covers. I still do MP3 play lists which I know will be compatible with OM.

Anything for a quiet life. That's me!  

I chose Beth Orton remix of Central Reservation as it was typical of the type of song I would put on. I knew she would like it and I certainly did.  

If I ever formed a group (unlikely) Michele Friendly would be high on the list as a potential name.

'You know what Old Ma? you have got really great taste, even if I say so it myself!'

Here is the album version. It is just a bloody good song no matter how you hear it. The Ben Watt re-mix is not to shabby either.

Ben Folds Five - 'Draw A crowd' (2012)

Ben Folds has been a hero of mine for some time and I was over the moon to hear Ben Folds Five were back together to release an album after 13 years! It has everything I love about Ben Folds Five...dramatic talented piano playing, quirky, sometimes heartfelt lyrics and great harmonies. If you love geek rock as I do (no offence Ben, believe me) and a brilliant array of instrument playing, check out this new album. I'm a sucker for the piano and an amusing lyric, hence choosing 'Draw A Crowd' from the album The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind. One of the things that cracks me up so much in life is stumbling across a "willy" drawn on the wall in either the loo or around the airport where I work. It is such a primitive and basic form of humour, like farting or toilet jokes but it is a sure thing for me! The lyrics of the chorus from this track impressed me as they are: "if you can't draw a crowd, draw dicks on the wall". Genius!

Beth Orton - Call Me the Breeze(2012)

 

This is a track from Beth Orton's new album 'Sugaring Season'(2012)  it has the same title as a J.J.Cale song, but it is completely different. I love the backing, it chugs along at a nice ol' pace and I am a sucker for that organ in the background and sometimes the forefront, reminisce of some of the classic tracks from the sixties. I have never been a big fan, apart from the occasional track hear and there, but this taster certainly wants me to hear some more of the new album !.

Call me convinced!

The Antlers - 'Crest' (2012)

Having a Scottish surname means I have a crest and on that crest it has antlers! A crap fact that has nothing to do with this gorgeous and atmospheric song from Brooklyn Indie band (I mean where else!? They seem to feature regularly on our tracks of the week), The Antlers. The muted horns, the haunting voice, very nice, very sombre. It has this Talk Talk, Spirit of Eden feel to it as well elements of Portishead, which coincidentally, fellow Bristolian, Tricky has made a remix of it. The Antlers have been around since 2006 and 'Crest' is taken from 'Underwater' their four track EP of equally moody and alluring songs. Perfect music for rutting!!? Ok, nevermind!

Is 'Rock music' dead? There has been very little "Rock music" that has excited me over the last few months so I was delighted to discover this new track from the Queens of the Stone Age front man.  It features on the new Jake Gyllenhaal film 'End of Watch' and is a little taster before the QOTSA 6th LP, that is due at the end of the year.

This track features on Ryans Love is Hell album and was written about English songstress Beth Orton, for whom he dated.  Marianne Faithfull provides the backing vocals on the album version.

I've always liked the song, but I had never really trawled through the lyrics until I was figuring it out on the guitar and then I realised how much of carnage that this relationship had left.

The lyrics make subtle reference to her, ("Norfolk" - she was born there, "Bethany", "daybreaker" - her album) and he undeniably held a torch for her after they split. If you know the song, it does reveal it in a new light.

He prophetically wrote the song, "This One's Gonna Bruise" and sang backing vocals on "Concrete Sky" - on the 'Daybreaker' album...
