MIDWEEK CRISIS, your man is on night shift, come to WEDNESDAY CLUB, we've got Robert Cray, but remember to leave your Porch light on!
ROBERT CRAY - Porch Light
There was a time when Robert Cray and his Band were right up there, he had a series of fantastic albums during the eighties, 'Don't be afraid of the Dark', 'Strong Persuader'. He was there with a string of artists that when they released an album I would buy it blindly, you just knew it was going to be good or at the worst there would be some winners on it.
This one comes from the Album 'False Accusations' and is a dark tale of infidelity. It has a pulsating base hook with haunting lyrics and a tremendous guitar solo in the middle, this guy can play, this guy can sing the blues. A lot of Cray's stuff at this time were dark stories of love and betrayal, I love all that. You can't beat a nice bit of scandal.
I did see The Robert Cray band once but it was one of these 'Red Stripe' in can affairs, I was in the Bar far too long and missed most of the set, Bloody good drink though! Bloody sore head the next day though! That I do remember to this day.
So the moral of the story is, when you are on night shift, remove that light bulb and keep well away from Red Stripe when Robert Cray is in Town.

Tulis commentsGreat story, Great Guitar player! Never really got into him - another curse of the 80's production - but I admit I quite fancy seeing him live, although if I do,, I'll take heed and stay clear of the Red Stripe!!!
Reply'Don't be afraid of the dark'....are you afraid of the dark? Is probably what I remember most about Robert Cray as that is all you said for a period. Great song though the guy has definitely got the skills to pay the bills. Think I have a couple of not so irie Red Stripe concert stories myself, Handsome Family and Tindersticks bad news, avoid.
ReplyGreat song by the way, listened to it a few times since yesterday and it's brilliant. I can see why you made that fuss all those years ago.
ReplyI love Robert Cray! This one or I Was Warned being my faves. So soulful and what a voice! Brings me back to old mix tapes from our holidays while getting ready to 'hit town'!
