Mother Love Bone - 'Crown of Thorns' (1991)

Music brings people together....Cheesy I know but thanks to the onset of this blog and it's guest spots, I've set out what I wanted to achieve, in a sense staying in touch with people through music. Basically doing what we used to do, having a few beers listening to tunes, finding out what we all like and generally hanging out but now doing it all virtually. This weeks guest spot is no different. His name is Stuart, I used to work with him years ago, he's a stand up guy, funny, witty, with a love of music and he's picked an absolute corker!! 

Given the nature and accessibility of music these days I'm harking back to a time when, for me at least, my experience of music was as much a physical as well as a mental one. Nowadays most of my music exists somewhere on my hard drive and the physical experience of holding and reading and caressing (yes!) a highly awaited fragment of sound has gone. My choice of course. I still feel the need to seek out vinyl and CDs in various 2nd hand record shops but, like any music junkie, the Internet offers a far quicker, if less satisfying, fix.

Therefore, my tune of choice is from an album that I still remember reading about, waiting for and buying.  Even 20 years on the sensation of excitement remains. I know the exact shop where it was purchased - an Our Price shop that no longer exists. I remember handing over the cash and diligently reading the sleeve notes before listening to it for the first time in my bedroom - 2 hours after it first appeared in my hands. That album was Apple by the Seattle based band Mother Love Bone. My chosen song is Crown of Thorns. Great album, great song, tragic ending. Lead singer Andy Wood died from a heroin overdose before the release, lending an even more poignant, tragic air to the album and to this song in particular. However, from the ashes was born the phenomenon that is Pearl Jam. But that's another story...

Anyway, enough of my yakking - give it a listen...
