SFW's Best of 2011

When Flycasual & I first started this blog back in March it was to recreate the 'listening' sessions of our past - we'd have a few beers and play a sort of Musical roulette, one of us would play 3 tracks, then another 3, then another 3, whilst catching up, we'd often find ourselves stopping the conversation and asking "What is this great track?", as you can imagine those boozing sessions would often go on far too long and the musical discoveries would often get lost within the hangovers.
"...a typical Tune Doctor listening session..."
Tune Doctor gave us an outlet to continue this  tradition - but allowed us to share & remember it!

However, when Old Pa & Shell Hunter joined, it didn't just continue the memory, it enhanced it - it gave us a wider range of musical discoveries, some would appeal, some wouldn't, but importantly, it wasn't the score, it was the taking part.

Our Guest spot has become the icing on the cake. When someone says "...you have to listen to this track, because....", I'll listen to it over and over and see if I can get a glimmer of why that song has tattooed itself onto that individual or it could be just how a particular song reminds us of someone, a situation, or a place...we all have them, let us know!

Finally this a thank you to Flycasual, Old Pa, Shell Hunter, our Guest Spot writers & finally the many people who have read or commented on the blog.....as the internet can be a lonely place!

Bon Iver - Holocene
"...Pure Sonic Medicine, Prozac for your ears...beautiful!"

Ryan Adams - Invisible Riverside
"..Ryan's back and better than ever with the album "Ashes & Fire" - up there with Heartbreaker!"

Lana Del Ray - Video Games
"...Internet sensation? Pouting Songstress takes over the world!..."

Chad VanGaalan - Peace on the Rise
"2011 has been full of Musical discoveries - Musician/Artist Chad VanGaalan was up there!"

Other Lives - For 12
"This struck me like an Arrow to the head, with it's sweeping strings, Americana has never sounded so good!"

My sentiments exactly, it's absolutely wonderful to be able to continue that tradition through TuneDr, as it's difficult now to see everyone regularily. Thanks to the blog there have been some great discoveries, Chad VanGaalen's track is one of my favourites of the year too.

Is Lana Del Ray a one trick pony? We shall see. Great track from Ryan Adams too, you've always persisted for me to listen to more and it's been worth it. Other lives, has sentimental value as it's one of the 1st posts you put up, hauntingly good. Holocene live on Jools Holland was amazing especially with the full band.

Time for a celebratory drink! Everyone get a beverage and drink up some medicine!

Lana Del Ray? One-Trick-Pony? Well maybe, but it's still a great song - and it makes me take note whenever I play the xbox too much!
Ryan Adams....by default I love everything he does...well maybe not Cardinology III/IV
Chad got me back into Indie Rock again...
Bon Iver surprised me...he could have stayed the same after "For Emma..." but headed into a different direction and the album is just brilliant
Other Lives...I've been listening to everything recently and when I saw this live performance it blew me away...just like the record!

All these just scratch the surface of the music discovered this year!!

Bon Iver - Highliht from the Album, prozac indeed
Ryan Adams - Invisible is best thing on the album...but the video is a bit indulgent if you are not a believer, IR does not come on until 6.43 secs in. For me I love it...but Ryan do digital as well!
Lana Del Ray - Nice song is she a clone?
Chad Van Gaalan - Interesting sound great track make you want to hear more
Other Lives - fabulous stuff, I want more

Great introduction Chris, bang on, I am loving every moment of it....if others get as much fun and enjoyment as we all obviously do then roll on 2012....well done all!

What can I say other than five brilliant choices. Four are in my top 20 alone and if I had hadn't missed Other Lives, I suspect it would have been up there too.
Bon Iver - Just fabulous.
Ryan Adams - I wrote him off years ago thinking he wasn't my thing but this truly hooked me. It could turn any skeptic.
Lana Del Rey - Great song and lyrics, it really grew on me.
Chad Van Gaalen - I think this could have been in all of our top 5s really but where would be the variety!
Other Lives - Love it, full stop.
A touching intro and I couldn't agree more. For our readers out there, this isn't an exclusive club! We want to know what songs we're missing out on and why you like them(please)!

'Holocene' is beautiful and may well be my prompt to get the album (better late than never?). The new Ryan Adams up there with 'Heartbreaker'? That really is saying something. Must nab that one soon. Thanks for the intro to Other Lives - I look forward to hearing more.
