Groove Armada - 'Superstylin' (2001)

It was a Saturday night, my best friend's 19th birthday and she had never had a party before. The pressure was on me as I had offered to DJ.  I had preselected a fail safe playlist with the 'oldies but goodies' on CDs and had downloaded a few essential newies (God bless you Napster). Superstylin' was one of those and I was looking forward to hearing the 'phat' base in all its glory reverbing in the Isleworth Scout Hut. I had a romantic vision of playing it when the party was in full swing, causing a clearing in the centre of the dance floor and an impromptu breakdance battle commencing. Alas this was not to be!

The DJ equipment was shoddy at best. Two Discman's glued to a piece of plywood with a fade in/out knob attached, a set of headphones straight from 1978 and 2 massive dusty speakers balancing precariously on a homemade mezzanine. Despite this, the party mood was clearly catching. I was enjoying the typical DJ look of holding one headphone to my ear whilst bobbing with the music and seeking out the next tune. During the evening, my friend ran over and said there was a whole bunch of people there she hadn't invited. As they seemed to be having a good time, we left them to it. I got into the rock stage of the night and this set off the gate crashers big style. One of them looked like he was old enough to be someone's dad. He was dressed in full camouflage and had long hair with a beard. He was clearly the belle of the ball. It was all getting a bit frantic and uncomfortable for the innocent party goers while the gate crashers were all happy moshing into each other. I had two choices to diffuse the situation: throw a bucket of cold water over them or use the calming influence of music. A bit of Groove Armada will do the trick! Sure enough, they stopped rough housing and went on to try their hand at spinning around on their backs on the floor. A big sigh of relief from all and party back to normal enjoyment mode.
