Pearl Jam seem to be having a bit of a renaisance at the mo., with their recently released Cameron Crowe directed movie (PJ20), they just seem to be everywhere and for this I am glad! For far too long it seemed that to say you were a PJ fan was like admitting you had a boil on your backside, or a hairy back - some things are best not said in public (I have neither, as the cream works fine thank you).
For many people, Pearl Jam will always be remembered when the Seattle Grunge scene broke and their anthemic sing-a-long songs like 'Alive' & 'Jeremy' - but for me their tenderer material hits me more. 'Around the bend' from 'No Code' album will always be my favourite. It was written by Eddie Vedder for Jack Irons (drummer) baby - and is about watching/holding his baby as it goes to sleep, and also how he's sorry that he can't do it everyday.
"...their synchronised jumping always needed more practice..."
Will Pearl Jam ever get back in the mainstream? Probably not, as they've spent the last decade trying NOT to be successful....just writing, recording and touring and making a few of us very happy in between!

Tulis commentsI'll admit that I'm one of the people who have never quite 'got' Pearl Jam. I don't think it's just them - it has more to do with the earnestness of their American style 'rawk', which is common to so many bands from over there. Having said that, I'm actually a big fan of Vedder's soundtrack to 'Into The Wild', which is very touching and shares the tender side with the clip here. They should concentrate on this stuff more.
ReplyS'Bear, I'll have to drip feed you some of their material and try to convert you!
ReplyI have to say I am in the SB camp here, maybe I have not listened enough and its one of these little rejection things that are unexplainable and there is no real resaon for it, saying that, I enjoyed this one and I can'ot deny his voice.
ReplyI absolutely adore this track for very different reasons than mentioned above. Been friends with Sfw for a long time so I like PJ by default...almost.
ReplyI'm a huge fan of PJ and have been since they first burst onto the scene. I try and sneak one of their tracks onto the compilations that my wife and I make from time to show that they aren't just about 10. Not always successfully I have to admit.
ReplyLondon Scouser, good man!
ReplySFW - I don't envy you regarding Pearl Jam cos I'd find it really hard not to try and introduce at least one track a month on here. I'd be interested to see what you would put on a 20 track CD of your fave PJ tracks. Maybe we could compare ?
Reply20 Favs / 20 tracks to introduce to people....sounds like fun!
Replysfw: Always ready to open my ears. :)
ReplyI have to say I am one of those people who loved 'Ten' and think Eddie Vedder has an undeniable great rock voice. I don't know why I didnt remain a megafan though? I love every song I hear by them, including this one, but it's almost like since the grunge days are all but gone, they've been swept under the carpet for me. I may have to let London Scouser make that album for me...
