Thea Gilmore/Sandy Denny - London (2011)

The builder is in and I have not listened to new music for over 2 weeks now, he works best with BBC radio 2 on, so BBC radio 2 is on, all day, the kettle is on, all day. Eventually something comes through, the voice is vaguely familiar, I keep hearing this song?. Who is it by?  I can never catch who it is? It begins to annoy me, so I go on the the BBC radio 2 website,  all I have to go on is the line 'I want to be in London' There is a song on the A play list by Thea Gilmore and Sandy Denny, it shines out like a beacon. What was that song called? you got it 'London'. 

'London' is from the album 'Don't stop Singing' from last year, I listened to that album and God forbid missed this one. (I keep missing them, just trying to listen to too much I guess). What a voice! Great job Thea and of course the writer of the song the late great Dame Sandy Denny.  

As a footnote my midweek post regarding  perfect pop tunes, well, would you believe in the space of a couple of hours the recommended classics by the Swede and Singing Bear were all featured on Radio 2.

Torche - Kicking (2012)

This great track by Florida rockers Torche features on their album "Harmonicraft" (which was released this week). It features melodic vocals, driving bass and so much guitar riffage, it would give Thor the hammer! RAWK! It's available free to download for free here or through http://www.torchemusic.com/

Cashier No 9 - 'Oh Pity' (2011)

I recently heard 'Oh Pity' on a Camden Crawl 2012  mixtape I downloaded free from 7Digital. (Camden Crawl, is the London Spring music festival to kick off the festival season, apparently), it was by far the stand out track and instantly had me hooked with it's melody and 'big sound'. In fact, maybe it's just me but I think it has this early 90's feel to it, a cross between Electronic and the psychedelica of Primal Scream, or something. That trademark 'big sound' is courtesy of fellow Northern Irish DJ/producer, David Holmes, who I'm big fan of, so big that I didn't realise he had produced last years Cashier No9's album, 'To the Death of Fun', from which 'Oh Pity' comes from. So not a new song but far too good to ignore. Yes, a pity as this would definitely have been one of my favourites of last year if it hadn't been so slippery and slipped through the net. Album downloaded, work journey sorted.

Santigold - Disparate Youth (2012)

This song literally caught me with my trousers down. I was trying on some jeans in H&M in the changing room and it came on. I had heard bits of it before but hearing it this time, I knew I liked it and needed to know what it was. Shazam to the rescue once again! Luckily no one barged into to the cubicle I was half dressed in, priorities are priorities! Santigold's album was just released a few days ago so I will definitely be having a listen. She has often been compared to M.I.A and mentions her influences are that of 80's pop and even Fela Kuti. She's got a good few collaboration's under her belt too including one with Amadou & Miriam that Flycasual featured on our Tracks Of The Week 08/04/2012!

Here are 4 Dylan Covers from the Girls all released in 2011. This was a great year for Dylan Covers with many compilation releases and live shows all celebrating the great man's 70th birthday. Don't forget we have to look forward to the Amnesty International Dylan cover extravaganza which will be released in January 2012. Oh! I can't wait for that after hearing the samples, I will definitely be buying that one.

WANDA JACKSON - Thunder on the Mountain(2011)

This is taken from Wanda's album 'The Party ain't over (2011)' and is a great version of 'Thunder on the Mountain'. Jack White from the 'White Stripes' was heavily involved with the album, you can't keep an 'old gal down'.

BARB JUNGR - Like a Rolling Stone

Next we have a stunning version of  'Like a Rolling Stone', this is a live version and is breathtaking. It is taken from her Dylan Covers album 'The man in the long Black Coat(2011)' another great album which  accompanies her first volume 'Every Grain of Sand(2004)' 

JUNE TABOR - 7 Curses(2011)

This one from the girls is by June Tabor and is taken from her album with the Oyster Band 'Ragged Glory(2011)' Another great album, look out for their superb cover of Joy Division's Love will tear us apart' 

THEA GILMORE - As I went out one morning

Thea Gilmore has been very busy this year releasing her covers album of the complete 'John Wesley Harding' as well as an album of songs with the words written by Sandy Denny . This is a live version of  'As I went out one morning' from JWH.

Sandy Denny & Thea Gilmore - Long Time Gone (2011)

This is taken from the album 'Don't stop Singing'. All the words are written by the 'late great' Sandy Denny and the music is done by Thea Gilmore. (Thea released an album earlier this year covering Dylan's John Wesley Harding in its entirety and thoroughly enjoyable that was too).The story behind the album and how the lyrics were discovered is documented extremely well here.

This is a really nice track and has all the hallmarks of fragility and melancholy which we associate with Sandy and with a brilliant performance by Thea. Congratulations Thea on a job well done! The rest of the album is pretty special too.

Eat More Cake - Glass Houses (2011)

I heard this track last month on a playlist I made and it stopped me in my tracks. The metallic, industrial beat creating a claustrophobic, dark and menacing atmosphere, which to me felt like a cross between Nine Inch Nails and Massive Attack, a match made in heaven! I was looking after my 2 1/2 year old son at the time, and perhaps the CeeBeebies playlist was a far more appropriate ambiance to set but he didn't seem to mind, all part of his musical indoctrination I say (strategic cough over the f word of course). It's a great track from the London 4 piece and I'll be looking forward to hearing more from Eat More Cake, looks like I'm going to have to put the diet on hold.

You can download a free remix album of theirs here,....it includes an interesting lo-fi take on Stardust's dance classic, 'The Music Sounds Better With You', well worth investigating.

MNEK - 'If Truth Be Told' (2011)

Don't knock it til you've heard it! This may look like its some cheesy pop act straight out of X-Factor but don't judge a book by it's high tops. MNEK is one talented individual. Only 17 and the music industry has already recognised his potential. The Guardian included him as one of the "10 of the next generation of music producers". 'If Truth Be Told' (available here) is his debut single as a recording artist but it seems he's already a veteran to the trade! It ticks so many boxes for me...80's sound, 90's sound, electro and pop. I'll be looking forward to throwing some shapes to this at my Xmas do. Love the video too, the running man wouldn't be out of place!

Sharon Van Etten - Serpents (2011)

If you look at different music sites you might have noticed the "buzz" about Sharon Van Etten recently, though I think this partly due to her brilliance and partly due to the crowd she's "hanging" with. This track has been recorded by The Nationals Aaron Dessner and will appear on the album Tramp, which features Dessner, Zack Condon (Beriut), the Walkmen's Matt Barrick, and Doveman's Thomas Bartlett amongst others - a hipsters who's who....download from Pitchfork here - it's bloody good!
