SIXTO RODRIGUEZ - Sugar Man (1970)

Every now and then you get little musical surprises. Well I got one last week. Flycasual text me and asked if I had seen the movie Searching for Sugar Man. He was sure I would have seen it or was aware of the story. I am sad to say it had passed me by, I was not aware of it at all.

I did search on the movie and found out it was the story of a guy who recorded two albums in the early seventies and his name was Sixto Rodriquez. Now the name rung a bell, you all know I am a big fan of Dylan covers so I checked my files and there he was with a couple of covers of  Like a Rolling Stone.

I was intrigued now and got hold of the movie. It was just such an amazing story, almost hard to believe. If you are not aware of it, well I will not spoil it and let you search it out if you are interested.

What makes it even more worth the effort is that the music is pretty dam good too.

Here are a couple of tasters for you from his first album Cold Fact (1970). There is a soundtrack album too.

Go on check it out, it is a great story. Sixto rules!

Such an incredible story and music is very good too, it's unfathomable to think how the whole world passed him by except for one place where he was quite possibly bigger than the Beatles (maybe). Someone got very rich out of him though that's fo sho'.

I've been trying to get Shellhunter to watch this movie as well as given her both the albums to listen to for months..possibly even a couple years now :-)
Glad someone else has shared the experience and enjoyed it. I was lucky enough to see him in concert at the Roadhouse in London last year.

Sugarman
Won't ya hurry
Coz I'm tired of these scenes
For a blue coin
Won't ya bring back
All those colours to my dreams
Silver majik ships, you carry
Jumpers, coke, sweet MaryJane.....

He did sing that song yes but it wasn't as an encore, it was during the set-list. No encore at that gig...I was just happy to see that he was alive :-)

Biltong man, how did you feel when you found out he wasn't dead? Was he that big in SA? It's unbelievable really.

I was packing my bags to leave SA for the UK at the time of him being 'found alive' so didn't get into the hype about it. His music was typically played on vinyl at high school house parties along with AC/DC by some bloke (me) who ALWAYS brought his own music to a house party in case the host ended up playing crap :-)
Come to think of it this could end up being a guest spot story, as this album reminds me of a house party when the police turned up and arrested the son of the hostess for beating his father up....!!

I apologise wholeheartedly biltong man! You have me this to watch ages ago, in a tidying frenzy I put it in 'a safe place' only to forget about it! Since this was posted, I have watched it and it's the most bizarre story but riveting watching all the same. The Sugar Man song is a great one and I couldn't stop singing along. Living in Saudi, we would always get caught up with a particular singer or band that may not have been all that big elsewhere. Shame it was something like 'Snow' or Vanilla Ice and not Rodriguez!
