THE BEAT - Mirror in the Bathroom (1980)
What a classic! it is just as good to-day, as when I first heard it. It was my track of the year in 1980.
Have you ever tried to change a bathroom suite?.
Take my advice, just don't even think about it. I tried once and it was just a disaster. When I fitted the actual toilet and did a test flush there was water everywhere. No matter what I did, there always seemed to be a leak. I wish someone told me that the rubber seal was meant to be the other way round. I found this out after hours of tears and sweat, sealants and fillers
.
Then there was fitting the bath. I just could not tighten the leads to the taps. I just could not quite get to it. All that was required was a couple of good turns and the problem would have been solved. I tried, I cursed, I scraped my knuckles, I cried, I screamed. I looked in the 'Mirror in the Bathroom' I had actually turned grey. I was about to go downstairs and get a sledge hammer and give that bath something it would never forget. Oh! Boy! It would have felt so good.Take my advice, just don't even think about it. I tried once and it was just a disaster. When I fitted the actual toilet and did a test flush there was water everywhere. No matter what I did, there always seemed to be a leak. I wish someone told me that the rubber seal was meant to be the other way round. I found this out after hours of tears and sweat, sealants and fillers
.
I later had to go to my local DIY shop for something and I mention my little problem to the guy there. 'Oh! what you need is 'is one of them tools' which he immediately produced for me. I went home and completed the job in lest than 1 minute.
Don't do these jobs, Get someone who knows what he/or she is doing. You get one shot at it and you learn all the faults the hard way. If I had to do again, it would be easy, (well easyish) but how many times do you change a bathroom suite.? Well I won't be doing it again. Thats for sure.

Tulis commentsI tried not to laugh at your misfortune Old Pa, but couldn't help myself - it's the way you tell 'em! I love the idea of the sledge-hammer giving the bath something it would never forget, very Basil Fawlty!
ReplyMy own DIY skills are non-existent, I've almost had a finger off just tightening a screw, but fortunately Mrs S is the Queen of DIY - where would I be without her? Not sure she'd go as far as to try installing a bathroom suite though!
TS - hate to say it but I reply upon Old ma for most things too...anything to do with cars. in fact anything...I have always worked on the principle...if you can get someone else to do it....
ReplySuch a good song. Never again....you say that but what about the tiles you did in the conservatory? They were so uneven I was always slicing my feet.
ReplyOh dear, Old Pa. Fit a bathroom out? No fear! My DIY skills are pretty poor, although I do try my terrible best. For anything on that kind of scale I would just have to get a bloke in - it wouldn't be worth all the stress! Great song by great band, though.
ReplyThing is, Old Pa, I notice you did say, "If I had to do it again, it would be easy" and... well... we could really do with a new bathroom suite... and seeing as you've now got one-of-them handy tools... Any chance? :-)
ReplyI bought that single when it came out and had forgotten but it still sounds great. Thanks!
Ok 'C' get the beers in...we will give a shot!
ReplyGreat post Old Pa - as The Swede said "it's the way you tell 'em". When I built the house (with the builders help) it was the most stressful thing I've ever done. Never again!
ReplyGreat post OP and a great song. I remember my brother buying the single from Memorydisc in Hounslow when it came out. We were big fans of them and it culminated in seeing them in Vikram's Occasions in Slough !!! Such a shame that Shell Hunter had to go Tokyo as she missed a great gig. With the bonus of Indian food thrown in !!
ReplyBrill post and top tune! The Swede got it spot on, very basil fawlty!! Can't believe I missed them playing in Slough, gutted.
