DYLAN COVERS #110 Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Subterranean Homesick Blues x 3

'Better stay away from those!'

RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS - Subterranean Homesick Blues(1987)

Here are three versions of Subterranean Homesick Blues by the one and only Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The first one is from their album The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987). The second is a Demo version from the Uplift sessions and is a bit slower and not quite as good.

The last version is taken from an DVD called Live of the Map (2001). It is a document of their 2000 tour of North America.

COVER NERD! - RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS 'HIGHER GROUND'

I still like covers a lot, and here in my bi-weekly spot I hope to share with you some of my favourites here. Tell me what you think and please feel free to submit your favourite covers by clicking here - London Scouser

Red Hot Chili Peppers - 'Higher Ground' (1989)

QUIZ NIGHT - PART 2 (for part 1, click here)

The following week I went back as a contestant along with FC, SH, OP as well as Old Ma and John who worked with OP. We didn’t do too badly overall in the quiz but weren’t the winners. However, after the main quiz they had rollover which consisted of 3 random questions that were extremely difficult. The rules stated that to take part in the rollover, at least half of your team had to have taken part the week before. Well miracle upon miracles, we won and the prize which had not been won for a really long time was in excess of £700. Just as we started celebrating, the manager came over and said that there had been a steward’s enquiry. One of the other teams had complained that we shouldn’t win as half our team hadn’t taken part in the previous week. I argued that although technically only 2 of the team had taken part, I was involved in the quiz as the host. He went away to think about it and I guess he must have been arguing with the other team. As it must have been a good 20 minutes before he finally came back and handed over the money. What a result !!!
Did We Miss The Superbowl Already ??

Due to shift work, we didn’t go back for a few weeks, but when we did we found that they had changed the rules for the rollover. You now had to go on a semi regular basis, as it was based on a league format and was won every two months by the top performing team.

As for this song, what can I say an absolutely cracking cover, in my opinion surpassing the already impressive original by Stevie Wonder. If I had to produce a list of my top 5 covers this would be there.
They are performing at Coachella in April this year along with The Stone Roses, Blur, Hot Chip & New Order to name but a small few. When the word awesome was invented, who'd have thunked it would be perfectly describing this Festival. Check out the full lineup here

NERD ALERT! - Flea & Anthony Kiedis have been in some of my favourite films (Back To The Future II & III, and Point Break respectively) but they also appeared together as a couple of rednecks in a truly awful film called The Chase (not the ITV Quiz) starring Charlie Sheen & Kristy (original Buffy) Swanson

GUEST SPOT # 38 - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Can't Stop

This weeks Guest Spot features SFW's better half, Vidette and her adventure to Hyde Park

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Can’t Stop

I love music. I love it because of its ability to evoke memories and its ability to stir/enhance pretty much all emotions. Whenever I hear this song, it takes me right back to Hyde Park in 2004 to the Red Hot Chili Peppers - Live in Hyde Park concert. I’d heard the concert being promoted on Radio 1 who were offering a short window to purchase tickets – I can’t remember why now but for some reason I wasn’t able to phone for tickets so my wonderful mum made the phone call for me – I have in mind that she spent several hours trying to get through (but this could be my poor memory not recalling properly and she may well have got through straight away) – the story however sounds better if we say she lost a day trying to get these tickets for me. Anyway, get my those tickets she did and even better than that she ended up upgrading to the Gold tickets which meant we were allocated to the section immediately in front of the stage (which given the size of the concert and the extent of people there was pretty amazing). Anyway, we arrived early and got in to Hyde Park as soon as it opened which was some hours before the concert was due to start – which on the positive ensured we could take up positions right at the front but meant there was then quite a wait before any music started (even longer given that the warm up act (can’t remember their name) did not go down well – and they subsequently stopped and walked off after only a few songs because the crowd kept on throwing bottles at them (not me I hasten to add). Anyway, James Brown (who followed) got the positive vibes going again, but it was RHCP that did it for me – from the minute they came on they were amazing. I remember jumping around like a fool with a massive grin on my face the whole time (I don’t get out to concerts much!) The other thing that I remember about this night was the long drive home after the concert to Wales – the concert was on a Sunday night and I hadn’t managed to get the Monday off work – it was the most surreal drive home – which might have been due to the late hour or from being on a high from the concert but I do wonder if it had anything to do with passive smoking from the couple who’d taken position next to us when we arrived and had chain smoked throughout the long wait before the concert started (and it didn’t smell like normal cigarettes!)
If you'd like to write a guest spot, please get in touch, it's great to find out what memories are associated to particular songs & artists.  Also, see our other Guest Posts here!
