R.I.P. Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter
For something he never done! |
Well this weeks Dylan Covers just had to be in respect of Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter who passed away this week. I remember driving home from work one Saturday back in late 1975 and hearing the song for the first time, it just knocked me away. I just had to hear it again, that violin sound stuck in my head. It was a few weeks later I saw the famous live recording shown on the Old Grey Whistle Test. It was very rare to see Dylan on film in these days. He looked intense, Scarlett looked sensational. You new he meant it.
Here are three different takes of the song the first is by Phish and was recorded 11/14/85 at the Memorial Auditorium Basement, Burlington, VT7. There are several albums around that feature this.
The next version is by Ani DiFranco and can be found on her album Swing Set (2000)
Finally, we have a live studio version by New Rising Sun (not a Jimi Hendrix cover band) and this is rather good and sticks pretty close to the original. It was recorded live at an AB session in Ancienne Belgique.

Tulis commentsThis Phish version is from November 14, 1985 (not 1997). It was broadcast during the From the Archives radio show at The Great Went (http://phish.net/song/hurricane/history)
ReplyAnon - I had it on a compilation album and after looking into it further I agree that info is wrong. I have updated to correct date and venue. Many thanks for taking the time to give me a deserved bolocking.
ReplyPhish - another one of those bands I just don't 'get'. Perhaps you have to be an American? Didn't like their version at all. Added nothing and was rushed.
ReplyAni Difranco - interesting. Kind of edgy and with some attitude.
New Sun Rising - they are an Hendrix covers band? I wonder how that works? Interesting that they are named after a song from 'Renaldo and Clara' by Ronee Blakley. Nice version. My favourite of the three.
I took part in a Bob Dylan tribute night in a local pub many many years ago. Each band covered a couple of songs from the bard's back catalogue, some more successfully than others. The band that took on 'Hurricane' just jammed and sang the chorus half a dozen times, ignoring the lyrics completely, probably a wise move. It's a very tough one to have a go at and interpret in a fresh way. I take my hat off to these three artists for having a bash at such an idiosyncratic song, but, for me at least, none of them hit the spot.
