SMOKEY ROBINSON - You Really Gotta Hold On Me
Dylan called him America's Greatest living Poet, now that is a hard compliment to live by. I am sure he has dined out on that statement many many times. But was Dylan just being a little ironic? Only he knows I suppose.
Beside all that, Smokey Robinson and his Miracles were part of the Great Tamla Motown stable and they had some fabulous hits during the sixties. Even the Beatles themselves acknowledge Smokey with their brilliant cover of You Really Gotta Hold On Me on their first album release.
Smokey had a solo album out on 1973 which I remember buying after I heard the magnificent Just My Soul Responding. Sadly I never bought anything else by Smokey.
Anyway enjoy these two great tracks.

Tulis commentsNo, I think Bob definitely meant what he said about Smokey. All the early Miracles stuff is near-perfection.
ReplySB - you can'ot fault the quality of the early stuff....but I suppose it's how you want to define the word poet
ReplyOutside I'm masquerading
Inside my hope is fading
That's poetry.

ReplyI don't think I'd heard 'Just My Soul Responding' before today. A fantastic track.
