I wrote this song with Bob Dylan? |
GREG LAKE - Love You Too Much (Live)
Well here you are, direct from the horses mouth Greg wrote the song with Mr D. However, I have quoted the following how he appeared to have come by the track :
"I wanted to do a Bob Dylan song on an album because I respect him a lot as a writer and as a performer, and I had a friend who used to be his tour manager," Greg explained. "I didn't want to do one of the regular songs of Bob's that people cover. I wanted to see if I could get something unusual to sing, maybe something that he had not released."
"He gave me a half-finished song, and he said, 'If you can finish it, then that might be the best solution,' so that's what happened."
Greg Lake first released the song with amended lyrics on his album "Greg" (1981), and also on a 7" single, below. Wow! it has all the hallmarks of 'ELP'.

Tulis commentsSounds like it should have been a bad outtake from either 'Empire Burlesque' or the 'Heart of Fire' soundtrack but the date doesn't tally for that to be the case. An odd one. Is my mind playing tricks on me or have I genuinely never heard about this before? I don't know. Sad to say, I don't like it as I was hoping for a cross between 'Idiot Wind' and 'Hoedown' or something equally surreal. I prefer ELP's own take on 'Man In a Long Black Coat'.
ReplyI remember my pre-release optimism turning to horror when I first heard this back in 1981. I was obviously a huge Dylan fan and had also had many a happy prog moment in the company of ELP - what could possibly go wrong? Everything, as it transpires! This is the the first time I've heard it since that day and I'm afraid my feelings haven't changed.
ReplySB - I had not heard it 'till recently, I agree it is not very good really...but interesting ish!
ReplyThe ELP cover is great!
TS - well that makes it 3 out of 3
ReplyI don't believe I've heard ELP's 'Man in a Long Black Coat' - sounds intriguing! Have you featured that one OPC?
