THURSDAY I'M IN LOVE - Massive Attack - 'Special Cases'

Thursday I'm in Love.... a chance to detox with my favourite tracks...

Massive Attack - 'Special Cases' (2003)

It's the first week of January, I'm stuffed with mince pies and of full of melancholy. It's such an anti climax after the chaos which is the Christmas period, it's a long month and money's too tight to mention. So what better way to celebrate this by listening to a song which perfectly matches my mood. Massive attack are probably my favourite dance act, ever since their sublime debut, the game changing album, Blue Lines in 1991.

Massive Attack..not taking their New Year's resolutions seriously!!
There are plenty of magnificent tracks to choose from their arsenal but 'Special Cases' (from 4th album, 100th Window), fits the bill for the sombre atmosphere it exudes. From the start, the bassline and synths creates a dark, tense and brooding sinister soundscape, all complimented beautifully by Sinead O'Connor's voice. There's even a part in the song (03:10) that reminds me of Joy Division (probably Atmosphere and maybe it's just me) further cementing the gloomy vibe. It's all strangely erotic too but what do I know.

I remember listening to this song in a hotel room overlooking a grey and rain soaked Dublin, it was perfect. I suspect it was helped by one pint of Guinness too many though.

On this gloomy, windy, Thursday, this reflects my mood perfectly.

Must be something in the air...I've been thinking about posting a track from '100th Window', which has been getting quite a few spins here lately. You beat me to it. Brilliant, of course. Not only the best 'dance' act ever but the coolest, too. But I'm biased.

Love this track and have been even more in awe of them since we saw them at that dive of a leisure centre in Reading. Fantastically moody and dark. I would see them again in a heartbeat.
