Flycasual's - Best 5 of 2014

2014 - Another Great Year For Music

This time of year always fills me with a sense of happy dread. Not only is Christmas round the corner with all the buffoonery that that entails but it's the real stress of compiling your best of the year. Never mind an eight month old baby and getting my head around a new job it was this exclusive list that was giving me sleepless nights. Many thanks as always to my fellow bloggers Old Pa, Sfw, London Scouser and Shell Hunter for providing class A material for the blog but also contributing to my soundtrack of the year. Props y'all!

Jungle - 'The Heat'

It's not very often a band comes along and completely knocks me out Frank Bruno style. These guys ticked all of my boxes since I first heard them earlier this year, they were elusive, their videos had some brilliant dance choreography and they had a retro vibe not heard since Hue and Cry in the 80's (ok maybe not them but they're definitely channeling a 80's white soul ting but light years better). Needless to say they didn't disappoint at Latitude either, the moshing (why?) kids did however. Band of the year, sound of the summer, stunning!

War On Drugs - 'Red Eyes'

On many a best ofs list and for good reason, it really doesn't get much better than this. Devastatingly brilliant, it gives me goose pimples every time. Beautiful melody, beautiful musicianship, a track perfectly put together...and then he goes "woo" and it kicks off! Almost Springsteen-esque. Oh stop gushing! We missed them at Latitude but we past the tent when this played and that was highly memorable. Thanks to Old Pa for the heads up, track of the year!

Royal Blood - 'Loose Change'

An absolute belter! That's a lot of noise coming from two guys. Watching them perform live is something else, this is only the beginning for the talented Brighton duo. A firm family favourite, 'Loose Change' is the brightest diamond from a solid debut album.

Run The Jewels - 'Close Your Eyes' feat Zach De La Rocha

Fierce, chaotic and rude, reminiscent to how I felt when I first listened to Public Enemy in the 80's. Run the Jewels is Rap's in form duo, EL-P and Killer Mike, with a VIP guest spot from Rocks very own, "I'm bloody annoyed", Zach De La Rocha (who incidentally did his verse in one take). Perfect for the middle aged dad to turn the stereo up to 11 in his Peugeot estate after the kids are safely dropped off at school/nursery. A Bombtrack fo' sho'.

Tony Allen - 'Go Back' feat Damon Albarn

It would have been hard to ignore Damon Albarn after he released his debut solo, Everyday Robots, earlier this year. Though it was a decent album with some notable standouts, it was the sobering collaboration with Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen that hit the spot.

It took lots of workin and twerkin to squeeze dem tracks into a top 20. A labour of love fo' sho' and I'm sharing it below, have a listen. Or if you're feeling a little adventurous try my B-sides for size here.....

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 30/11/2014 Blake Mills, Gang of Youths, Run The Jewels

Three Tracks that forced us awake!

Old Pa's Corner:-
Blake Mills - Don't Tell Our Friends About Me (2014)

I love this one from an album by Blake Mills called Heigh Ho (2014). There are parts in that song I think we can all identify with, but I won't go in to that right now! It reminds me a bit of Ry Cooder in style. I heard this track by chance and have had it on constantly since. I have just read a stunning review of the album in Uncut so I am off to listen to the whole album. If it is as good as this then Xmas has come early.

Sfw:
Gang of Youths - Poison Drums (2014)

Sydney based hoodlums, Gang of Youths seem to have it all.  Poison Drum is like a "Weird Science" combo of The National-War on Drugs-Springsteen all rolled up into a masterpiece of a song.  It has attitude, a melody and gets better and better with every listen.  I love it!

Flycasual:-
Run The Jewels - 'Close Your Eyes' feat Zach De La Rocha (2014)

Fierce, relentless and noisy, this reminded me of what it was like listening to Public Enemy back in the day. Zach De La Rocha's verse making me feel particularly rebellious by tempting me to go and knock at my next door neighbour's house and run away! Anyway, needless to say this knocked me out like Mickey Rourke's Russian come back last week. Run The Jewels are Old School champ Killer Mike and producer extraodinaire EL-P, 'Close Your Eyes' is taken from their 2nd album, Run The Jewels 2. What we do need to hear more of is Zach......come on pal, sometimes even middle aged dad's need to kick over their recycling bins.

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 20/10/13 - Hot Natured, Breton, Deltron 3030, Darkside, Lizzie And The Yes Men

Five tracks the brought the Clangers out of retirement...

London Scouser:-
Deltron 3030 - 'Melding Of The Minds ft. Zach De La Zocha' (2013)

I haven't heard many new tracks recently so I was grateful earlier this week when Flycasual dropped this gem into my inbox. Deltron 3030 is Del Tha Funkee Homosapien who first came to my attention in 1991 when I bought and loved the single 'mistadobalina'. He then disappeared off of my radar until 10 years later when Gorillaz exploded onto the scene with 'Clint Eastwood' I immediately recognised his laid back rap style. He featured on a brilliant track on Handsome Boy Modelling School's 2004 album White People called 'The World's Gone Mad' which also features Alex Kapranos on vocals.
This track is from his latest project and features the aggressive vocal style of former RATM lead singer Zach De La Rocha. Neither of them have lost any of their edge over the past 20 plus years thankfully. I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.

Old Pa's Corner:-
Darkside - Paper Trails (2013)

All you big Starwars fans out there have nothing to fear from this fabulous track by the Darkside, think Pink Floyd, think the Blues, think Can and it kind of sums up this track. The album version is about 5min long, but the session version, below is just over 10 minutes and these guys really get stuck in .They really get there.! It sort of complements the short version and it is not a second too long. I was going to say persevere with it and you won't be disappointed. Persevere is the wrong choice of word. In fact it's too short!

The word is perfect, enjoy.

It is from their new album  Psychic (2013), it's really good, something you can get your fangs into.

Track of the year alert!.

They should, if they have not already thought of it, release this Session version as a double CD single.. Too good to talk too!

Shell Hunter:-
Breton - 'Got Well Soon' (2013)

Now here's an interesting one. I heard it the other day on BBC6 and I instantly liked what I heard. At the time, I couldn't find the song or anything about the band so for the meantime they were shrouded in mystery. This was quite apt really as I read the band play live wearing black hoods....creepy! The London band have got their fingers in many a multimedia pie being involved in not only music and remixing, but award winning film making too. They get up to all this concocting in their artist studio nicknamed Breton Labs, which makes me think of mad scientists more than musicians! I love the dark and eerie vocals mixed in with the bouncy Friendly Fires-esque beat. Its like electronica for zombies!

Sfw:-
Lizzie And The Yes Men - Unstoppable (2013)

Lizzie And The Yes Men are a four piece from London who describe their sound as "Tarantino surf pop".  Produced by the William Rees from the Mystery Jets, this track could easily feature on the next Tarantino masterpiece. With it's 90's guitar riffs, lovely vocals and a bass line that could start the next Pixies record, it has it all.  The video reminds me of watching live music in my local towns Bandstand, minus the strongbow.

Flycasual:-
Hot Natured - Alternate State feat Roisin Murphy (2013)

I get excited each time there's a new Roisin Murphy track, I've been a fan ever since I liked her tight sweater with Moloko. I don't know what it is about her, maybe it's her good looks, distinct vocals or probably the fact that she's a wee bit of a fruit loop that makes her so appealing. 'Alternate State' sees her team up with Hot Natured, an Anglo-American DJ collective, who have released an impressive debut album, Different Sides Of the Sun recently. It's well up to scratch, just a simple deep house tune immaculately delivered by Roisin, it's perhaps not breaking the mould but certainly raising the bar for the genre.
