TRACKS OF THE WEEK 03-08-2014 - Jeff Tweedy, Bahamas, Weezer, Rag 'N' Bone Man

Four tracks more exciting than the Commonwealth Games!

Flycasual:-
Rag 'N' Bone Man - 'Put That Soul On Me' (2014)

I've been recovering from the fall out of Latitude and catching up on artists that I missed. You're never going to be able to see everything and your constantly having to make a Sophie's Choice of sorts, Rag 'N' Bone man was one of them. With a fantastic soul voice, the Brighton based Bluesman has his roots firmly in Hip Hop as is evident from this track and a few others in his back catalogue I've been catching up on recently (Dog 'N' Bone and Bluestown EPs). 'Put That Soul On Me' (produced by Dirty Dike), with it's sweet little piano loop is taken from one of two EP's released last month, Put That Soul On Me and Wolves, perfect if you're in need for laid back bluesy Hip Hop. Rag 'N' Bone man is probably one collaboration away from stardom and is arguably the best act we never saw at Latitude.

Download Wolves for free at Mr Rag 'N' Bone Man's Bandcamp page here.

Sfw:-
Bahamas - All The Time (2014)

Afie Jurvanen, a.k.a. Bahamas, is back with his first release for two years with the effortless laid-back-indie-pop-soul (or whatever you want to call it!) "All This Time". He first caught my attention with the excellent lost in the light which featured on 2012's Barchords, of which this follows a similar mould.
It features on Bahamas' upcoming 12-song LP, Bahamas is Afie, which arrives August 19 on Jack Johnsons Brushfire Records.

Old Pa's Corner :-
Jeff Tweedy - Summer Noon (2014)

Classic Jeff Tweedy from his new album Sukierae (2014) out in September. This could be lifted of any of the the great Wilco albums it is just perfect.

London Scouser:-
Weezer - 'Back To The Shack' (2014)

It's been a few years since I've heard anything by Weezer and they're back on form. They tick all the boxes for me with great riffage and a catchy tune. My favourite lyrics are "let's turn up the radio, turn off those stupid singing shows"... Amen to that !!! This was released on the 23rd July and is the lead off single to their 9th album 'Everything Will Be Alright In The End' which is out on September 30th.

SFW'S Best Of 2013

Do you remember the long hot summer? Neither do I.  but let me take you on a brisk walk down memory lane, stopping off for some mince pies, mulled wine and and my top 5 Tracks of the Year.

Tracks of the Year!

Daft Punk - 'Lose Yourself To Dance' (2013)

I can honestly say that 2014 was the year that Daft Punk (with Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams help) brought disco back.  It's safe to say that until their input, disco would only be played in 'over 40s' theme nights and weddings. An instant classic.

Just in case you missed it, this unofficial video was a highlight - and it's not too late to be using the moves at your Christmas party.

Mavis Staples - 'Jesus Wept' (2013)

Stax legend Mavis Staples became reborn with the input of Wilco's Jeff Tweedy in the producers role. Their collaboration on the album "One True Vine" brought Gospel into the 21st Century. Every song carries a gravitas and emotion and could easily bring you, and jesus, to tears. Spellbinding.

Seryn - 'Ivory Black' (2013)

Texan 6-piece Seryn knocked me out with the gorgeous, Ivory Black.  Rich harmonies, subtle layers and a fine blend of tenderness and emotion. Listen to the live or studio versions of this track and the result will be the same - it will flatten you like a runaway rhino.

George Ezra - 'Did You Hear The Rain' (2013)

Bristolian, George Ezra was one of my musical discoveries of the year. I first heard when I saw him support Tom Odell in March and I immediately thought he was some sort of "Woody Guthrie-meets-Ray Lamontagne". Ignore this baby faced assassin (with a voice of a 50 year old) at your peril. If he was around in the 60s, he'd probably be as well revered as the other Greenwich Village gang. One to watch!

Dustin Tebbutt - 'The Breach' (2013)

Dustin Tebbutt's The Breach came from nowhere.  The Breach was like a musical mammoth that appeared on the tundra after a snowstorm, I loved it then and I love it now. My Track of the Year.

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Wilco/Bill Fay - Jesus Etc.

MIDWEEK CRISIS you need somthing new, come to WEDNESDAY CLUB we've got Whiskey India Lima Charlie, a Bear that Sings and a Swede that Scratches, Oh! and Bill Fay
Whiskey India Lima Charlie

WILCO - Jesus Etc.(Live)

I have been a fan of Wilco and Jeff Tweedy ever since I bought their 'Summer Teeth' Album in 1999 . Every new album I have hastily got hold of immediately on release. They have never matched before or after the heights of  'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' (2002). It is frightening to know that their Record label at the time did not think it was suitable for release. One of my favourite and standout tracks from the album is Jesus Etc. I came across this brilliant live version of the song quite by accident.

A few weeks back the artist Bill Fay was brought to my attention when I was browsing through the excellant Blog Grownupbackwards (The Singing Bear). I was aware of Bill Fay but had not listened to his stuff. I knew he had a new album out after many many years. The album  'Life is People' is magnificent. Here is a true talent. It includes a fabulous slowed down cover of Jessu etc. Which along with the rest of the album is on my ear phones constantly. When I was searching Youtube for this version I came across the amazing Wilco live version.(Play it loud)

The moral of the story is, I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about music but since I have been contributing to Tune Doctor I have met other like minded people and have been introduced to many Artists and songs that I have not even heard off before. Bill Fay is a shinning example.   Altogether it has been a far more rewarding experience than I could ever have imagined.  So I would like to thank my fellow TD boffs and of course, The Singing Bear, The Swede,  etc etc.

Keep 'em coming! friends!

BILL FAY - Jesus Etc.(2012)

I hope these two version turned your 'orbit around'.
