Roni Size - 'Brown Paper Bag'

Recollection Collection......musical memories recalled with affection!

Roni Size - 'Brown Paper Bag' (1997)

You'll always remember when you lost your dignity!

Roni Size, another artist to add to the already impressive Bristol dance scene alumni. As a distant cousin of Hip Hop, I was fairly into drum and bass at the time the Mercury Prize winning 'New Forms' came out. For me the track, 'Brown Paper Bag' was incredible with it's double bass intro which created a fabulous tension before the beat kicked in.

I remember hearing this track at this D n' B club in China Town with a few friends after work. We were still in uniform and probably looked liked dweebs but after a few drinks it didn't matter. As soon as I heard the few bars of that bass line I bolted as coherently as possible to the nearest speaker. Half proficiency level one front crawl and half reggae moon stomp, I proceeded to mash up the dancefloor much to the horror of my collegues. Covered in goosebumps and with a big smile, I didn't care....it was so good to hear it excruciatingly loud!

Mr Size yesterday, into Gucci leather bags now.

Tune Doctor keeps playing my favourite records! Surely one of the best of all Drum n Bass tracks. So blindingly inventive. Sadly, DnB seemed to reach a bit of a dead end quite soon after it took off. Not sure why Roni Size didn't manage to capitalise on his early popularity, though...he really had something special going on. Biggin' up the bRistol sound!

I hope there isn't security camera footage of your "mashing" ....would probably resemble skiing on the spot.

Probably would have just captured me falling over, like that one time we were out in Camden.

....was that the time you fell over drunk - a bit like in Avatar when they disconnect the "link" - and pushed me into someone....which made it look like it was my fault....

This is one of those songs that if someone wanted to buy an ipod with a ready made "cool" playlist to show off to their friends, would definately feature. It is so damn good!

Your dancing is a sight to behold Fly, I can vouch for that.
