Here are two interesting ones, the first is a versions of  My Back Pages by the Keith Jarrett Trio and is taken from their Live album Somewhere Before (1968). I like this and it is worth a listen.

The second is a take of  She Belongs To Me  and is by The Nice, it can be found on the album  Nice (1969). It was recorded Live at the Flimore East, New York in 1969, It is a bit of a ramble and a bit indulgent for my taste, but have a listen and make your own judgement.

Chris Clarke - 'Beads' / Radioinactive - 'Never Ends'

Yes Yes Y'all...two tracks that had me bobbing my head on the school run.

Here's another Californian MC I'll be keeping my eye on. 'Beads' has a laid back, old skool ting going, in the same mould as Coolio's 'Fantastic Voyage' with an extra helping of P-Funk thrown in there for good measure. What's more it's an ode to the bead...I can relate...having grown up during the D.A.I.S.Y. Age, I spent my time in haberdashery's and stealing a wooden bead or two from my mum's bead curtains to make necklaces. I would probably still be wearing them too if it wasn't for the disparaging looks I'd get from my wife or the '5 star' airlines I work for. I digress, I've enjoyed what I've heard so far from the MC/Producer, witty lyrics and cooly delivered, The Handpicked is an album well worth checking out.

Radioinactive - 'Never Ends' (2012)


I'm not one for musical gimmicks, so I was just about to poo poo this track when I thought "hang on this is really good". And so it should be, the LA MC has plied his trade since the early 90's, working with a number of established high profile crews and MC's. Delivered with vocal dexterity and wit, 'Never Ends' is an amusing (as is the album, The Akashic Record, from which it's taken) and catchy track which had me hooked, it also reminded me a bit like Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart. From California via the Middle East, these are some seriously dope habibi's.

Daughter - Home (Jon Hopkins remix) (2013)


I watched 2 movies back to back last week, both were very watchable, although I would not say they were Oscar material.


The first one was called The Citizen and was about an Arab immigrant who won a green card in a lottery and arrived to start his new life in the United States on the 10th September 2001 (Ouch). It is well worth a watch and the only thing I will tell you is that the Good guy wins.


The second movie is called How I Live Now and starts of as if it is a Walt Disney type kids movie. I very nearly switched it of, just before a nuclear device was detonated in London. The movie is about how the kids in the movie survived. A kind of Love story too. It is just about worth a watch.


What made it stand out for me and the purpose of this post was the Soundtrack. I kept saying to Old Ma throughout the movie that I liked this Soundtrack and I must find out after who it is by. Imagine my surprise when I found out it was by none other than Jon Hopkins and there is a soundtrack album available. This would be his second album this year. His other one is called Immunity and is rather good. A track featured on our Tracks of the Week earlier this year.


Although most of the tracks on the How I Live Now are instrumental, I had to chose the track 'Home' which is a remix of the song originally on Daughter's EP The Wild Youth (2011) as it hit me right away while watching the movie with its sort of early Joy Division base.

Jeremy Squires - Oblivious

I know I jest about Tuesday Blues being a little gloomy, but for me it is an opportunity for me to share singer/songwriters who I find inspiring.

Here is someone who I know very little about but after hearing this I've wanted to find out more! Jeremy Squires is a multi-instrumentalist/singer-songwriter from North Carolina. I know it isn't one of the happiest of tracks, but his haunting melodies, evocative lyrics reminds me of songwriters such as Richard Buckner and Damien Jurado. Oblivious features on his recently released album, When Will I Go.  

If you like the above, have a listen to this cover of Damien Jurado's Sheets - you can certainly hear the influence within his songwriting!

I'm a big fan of Spotify, since being introduced to it I've thrown away the shackles of my iPhone and haven't looked back since. When listening through my PC it looks at my listening history and offers tracks that I might like. This track is an example, after having featured RATM a few weeks back, Spotify suggested I listen to this which is on the 20th anniversary re-release of their debut album. It has a different less shouty vocal style by Zach which I like and features the trademark sound that made them famous.
A couple of days ago I decided (after putting it off for weeks) to clear the front path and garden of all of the billions of leaves that had congregated and needed something energetic to get me through it. This song and the whole album helped. The path is clear and 5 black bags and a bin full of leaves later I had my track.

Old Pa's Corner :-
Bruce Springsteen - High Hopes (2013)


Well it had to be Bruce this week. It is always an event when Mr Springsteen releases something new. The song is a 'new' version of a track previously released on the EP Blood Brothers (1995) and has been reworked and re-recorded and will be available for you tomorrow.
Here is a taster of the song "High Hopes" it appears there will be a brand new full-length album which could be released as soon as January.
What a start to next year! what! with Andy Murray making a come back too. I can hardly wait, I am just so excited. It's great to be alive!

There are several live versions available on YouTube as well as the 1995 version. By the way the song is not actually written by Bruce.

My opinion! ...well I am biased...but I love it, after a few hearings, it is encouraging for the new album...but that is me being...hopeful !

Maximo Park - 'Brain Cells' (2013)


I usually get worried if an artist I like change their style for a new release but this has really grown on me. This new song from Maximo Park makes me feel like joining the hoody bloke for a bit of a rave up! Sombre, haunting but with a clubby edge, I'm liking this different approach. They are due to release their 5th album, Too Much Information next year and will be matching that with a Tour. Free stuff alert! The lads have generously allowed a free download of Brain Cells for the trade of your email address for future news. Fair trade me thinks! Get in there my son!

Fractures - Cadence (2013)
  

Fractures is Australian multi-instrumentalist/vocalist/producer, Mark Zito.  Zito was involved in a near-fatal fall which left him confined to a neck-brace for three months but he obviously used this hiatus wisely, writing this eargasmic track with its similarities to James Blake, Astronauts and Stateless.  One to watch!

Flycasual:-
Baloji and L’Orchestre De La Katuba - 'Buy Africa' (2013)


It has been a cold week and this track was like the musical equivalent of thermal pants, warm and comforting. That may sound a bit disparaging but far from it as Afrobeat's infectious grooves does have that kind of effect on you. I've thoroughly enjoyed the Red Hot and Fela album from where 'Buy Africa' is taken from, featuring a favourite of mine, Congolese/Belgian rapper, Baloji (see post here) and L'Orchestre De La Katuba, providing some brilliant vintage soukous guitar. The AIDS organisation, Red Hot, have released a fitting tribute to the Nigerian Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti, who would have been 75 this October had he not died of the disease in 1997. An album of Fela classics, covered and interpreted in their own way by a number of top US and African artists....recommended listening.

I really can't help myself with this one. I now realise not only does music bring me amazing pleasure but dance does too! I wish I could say it was my dancing but, no, its watching other people dance. My favourites are Latin American and B-Boy dancing but really anything will do. I'm an avid watcher of 'Strictly' and was catching up the other day. I knew the crew were due to do their bit at Blackpool so was looking forward to a fun number or two. Well, I watched the opening number and I was shocked at the emotion that came flooding in! Am I getting old? First of all there were the dancers and the celebrities who showed their face, then the little kiddies who looked so professional. Then the old folks who probably dance there every week (and have been for years). Something twigged in me and I felt a tear, such tradition! I almost felt like I did during the London Olympic Opening Ceremony! I can't explain why but it was just seeing the old folks with the kids all doing something beautiful and timeless that got me....shucks.



Not only is this song associated with a really fab, fantastic, feel good Aussie take on the Dirty Dancing film, but whenever I hear it I, get transported to a little taverna call Duke's Bar in Cyprus, where I learned what's what on my first holiday away from home. On karaoke night, this song would be dusted off, again and again, by an ol' geezer who insisted we call him....Jorge. He was brilliant, bless him, but he couldn't speak any English except the words of the song which were perfect!

The film Strictly Ballroom is a classic, I love the cheesy video that was made to accompany the film in 1992. I'm guessing that all blokes are gonna hate this one! Hard core fans, check out what I'm taking about below!

DYLAN COVERS #126 - Barb Jungr - Like a Rolling Stone x 2

Barb Jungr is an English Cabaret/Jazz/Blues/Soul singer, who in the past few years has put out two volumes of Dylan covers albums. The the first album is called  Every Grain of Sand (2002) and the second one, where she covers LARS, is taken from  The Man in the Long Black Coat (2011).

You might not like this jazzy slowed down version, but you cannot deny the intensity of the live version recorded at the Barbican in London 2005. The quality is not great but it is still well worth the effort.

Both albums are worth a listen,  but an acquired taste. They taste pretty good to me.

They don't make them like this anymore! I was channel surfing the other day and I caught the end of The Lost Boys. It reminded me how much I loved it all as a teenager and in particular, the Soundtrack. It is just littered with Nostalgia.


This was my favourite but I can never forget the testosterone fuelled "Rock Off" between Michael Hutchence & Jimmy Barnes (from Cold Chisel) on "Good Times". Good Times indeed.

This post is dedicated to Regis Serre the brother of Old Ma and really, the last of her closest family. Regis passed away last week at the age of 78.

At my age you do start to think about your own vuneribility, especially when you hear of old school friends and work colleagues  'dropping off'.'

Sorry about that!  but it does come a more frequent event the older you get. My Sister Rose said at our age,
it is a case of  'dodging bullets'.

Both Old Ma and myself have dodged a few sniper shots ourselves, over the passed couple of years. But we are still here up and blogging!

I am glad  (thankful)  that I have made it to my age, (I am only 64)  rather than having had to go  'over the trench wall'  in the first world war  or 'rush the beaches' at Normandy. So really, reaching 64 years is a lot better than the many many good souls, who were taken at the prime of their lives, in these two horrible wars.

'so hey! be thankful Bro!' 

Sorry for being a bit morbid,  but it kind of hits you when someone close to you goes! 

I have always loved  My Generation by The Who. The immortal line ' hope I die before I get old'  is something I and a lot of the fifties/sixties generation have probably said at one time. We would rather die before we became a bother or a burdon to our kids, or infact a burdon to anyone.

Take my old Mum, she was visiting me a few years ago before she passed away and I found out she had a health problem and when I asked her why did she not tell me about it. I got the same old response :

'I din't want to bother you'

I had to scold her, tell her off :

 'it is much worse now, if only you had told me sooner....' .

Thank God! we have progressed from that kind of mentality!!

Have we? 

I did not get to know Regis well, as he lived in Canada, but I would have loved to have know him better..

My memory is getting bad.  I heard this a few months ago and was blown away, but I sadly forgot to share it. So when I saw the winner of the voice performing this exact version I needed to find it and reclaim it for Eddie & Laura.

I've posted Laura Marling tracks in the past, her talent needs to be seen to be believed - on this she's not even trying - it looks like she is thinking about her afternoon tea. She's the musical equivalent of George Best, completely effortless, sorry, I'm gushing.  As for Eddie, he's pretty rad, he has a beard and long nails. :-)

Anyway, it captures the beauty of Springsteen's tale of desperation and wanting to escape a shitty town perfectly. It also hit a nerve and triggered a number of memories from my youth. Feeling trapped living in a small Welsh mining town, wanting to escape and knowing there are better things out there....

Spooky Tooth were what I suppose you would call a  'Progressive Rock Band'. They were at their peak during the late sixties and early seventies and were quite a well thought of Band. Well I liked some of there stuff.
Here are two versions of  Too Much About Nothing  the first from their album  It's all About (1968) and the second is taken from the album BBC Sessions/Live in Europe (2001).

Both are excellent versions.

Howe Gelb - Vortexes (2013)


'Welcome to the Desert'

Says Howe Gelb, better known as the main man of Giant Sand. This is his second album this year. I don't know what they are doing out there in the desert but it seams to be working. This is the first track from his new album The Coincidentalist (2013) which just been released.

Howe has another one of these distintive voices and this is a smooth cool evening breeze of a track after a hot burning scorching day in the desert heat. Or even just relaxing after a hard day at the Office.

The Wombats - 'Your Body Is A Weapon' (2013)

Now I'm pretty sure this is not everyones cup of char, but I have to acknowledge the fact it makes me smile. It is good old indie disco plain and simple and the tinges of 80s synthesisers just make it. I've always had a soft spot for The Wombats, they don't take themselves too seriously and you can't deny they've got a knack for a catchy chorus (some may mistaken that for annoying, but not me). The line that tickles me and is a nod to all of us 80s kids out there is 'my body is a Temple Of Doom'. Any reference to Indiana Jones is alright in my book! Oh and I also like the fact he sings casual, calling the woman in question 'Love'. Cheeky bugger!

RY X - Berlin (2013)


My wifey came home from work (always a good thing) and said "I have a song that is right up your street". "It's by RY X, do you know of him..." My blank impression gave it away. He is an Australian born, LA Based musician who has just released an EP that has got me all excited. Atmospheric, Melancholic & Emotive, it certainly hit the spot. I guess the missus knows me too well

Cecile Mclorin Salvant - 'Nobody' (2013)


The great thing about watching Later with Jools Holland is that one minute you're watching some electronica from Minneapolis and the next you have a captivating performance from Florida's Francophile Jazz singer, Cecile McLorin Salvant. 'Nobody' is one of those songs that must have caught me at the right moment, as it made me stop and listen, enthralled. I thought it was unique, a bit bonkers, a bit Billie Holiday, perhaps a little more acid tinged but what an incredible voice. And accompanied by an equally impressive trio of double bass, piano and percussion and you've got a winning formula.

In 2010, Cecile won the prestigious Thelonious Monk vocal Jazz competition and 'Nobody' is taken from her second album, WomanChild, out earlier this year.

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip & Flux Pavilion - 'Gold Teeth' (2013)





I won't make any excuses for selecting another Scroobius Pip track. Its a great song full of his clever lyrics (on this occasion he's dissing some of his fellow rappers and their penchant for the bling), with a great backing and to cap it all off it has a great video. 'Nuff said.

I parked my baby next to an older green beetle I had been admiring for months in the college car park and strutted to my art lessons like a proud peacock. I couldn't wait until my free periods to cruise around Twickenham high street with my friends. I got the great comments I was after about my car tape too, could it get any better?
I had already arranged to pick up 2 friends after college and go to the pub. I couldn't wait to say, 'Just a diet coke for me, I'M driving!' We decided on the Wetherspoons in Hounslow, only the best for us students. With my steed safely parked at the Gala Bingo next door, we went in and were having a whale of a time until something caught my eye out the window. My friend said, 'Hey a beetle like yours!' and I realised in a terror I hope never to relive again, It was my beloved beetle on the back of a tow truck being dragged away at full speed! 'Thats my f@*king car!!!' We all ran out of the pub and as much as I wanted to chase it down the road at full pelt, I had to accept it was gone and do the only thing I could, reluctantly call Old pa. Feeling like Cameron from Ferris Bueller after the Ferrari crashed out the window, I punched in the number. Oh God, the dream was well and truly over, I felt sick. After a seriously loud ear bashing, Old pa calmed down and realised it was no fault of my own that I wasn't roadwise. I was able to extract a mobile number for the tow company from the minuscule, filthy sign that was much below eye level at the gala car park and give it to old pa. Old Ma called back saying she had caught the guy and he reluctantly agreed to hang around at a petrol garage to let us pick the car up for a whopping £280! It was either that or pick it up from a lot in Iver the next morning.

How was I to know?!
Oh boy was I quiet on the way home feeling very sorry for myself. Needless to say, the following day I decided to give Jazzman the day off after his traumatic experience and went out to the pub with my pals. Now that we had all slept on it, Old pa began to see the funny side and my friends couldn't stop ribbing me about it. There was a DJ on at the pub and in between songs I heard him make an announcement. 'This song is dedicated to a girl who managed to get her car towed away on her first day of driving it!' I went redder than Jazzman when this track came on, thanks a lot!!

DYLAN COVERS #125 Hank Shizzoe & The Directors/New Red River Rebellion/Invisible Republic - Yea Heavy and a Bottle of Bread

Here we have three different versions of one of my favourite tracks from the Basement Tapes,  Yea  Heavy and a Bottle of Bread.

Oh! I remember it well, one day I went to my local record shop in 1972 and there was this fabulous LP of Dylan's Basement Tapes output. It had a picture cover of cartoons depicting each track. I snapped it up immediately and rushed home for a Basement session. It was nothing more than sensational and the LP was called the Little White Wonder  the picture of the cover is above. This was well before they released the official Basements tapes album. I was in heaven.

The first take is by Hank Shizzoe and the Directors and is from their album Live in Motown. I really like this version, probably my favourite of the three.

The next is by the Invisible Republic and from an album featuring tracks all taken from the Basement Tapes and is called A Basement Tapes Revival (2011)
